Story of Leeds United's transfer deadline day as pieces finally fall into place (2024)

After what's felt at times like a long summer, often with some real concern, we've finally reached the end with transfer deadline day here. Leeds United have secured six signings so far this summer and things are looking up, but there is still work to do if they are to head into September in the position they hope to be in.

In the last week we've seen deals for Largie Ramazani and Manor Solomon completed, but manager Daniel Farke wants more strength in depth and balance to his squad after a series of high-profile departures. Leeds have been linked with a move for Hungary international Roland Sallai while an offer for Sheffield United's Gustavo Hamer has been rejected by the Blades.

Ajax defender Owen Wijndal was linked, but it is moves for midfielder Ao Tanaka and versatile defender Isaac Schmidt which now look close to being done today. Follow all the latest developments in one place in our live blog which will automatically refresh below.

Crazy deal

This is just staggering

James Smailes

Schmidt first words on deal

Isaac Schmidt has done an interview with Sky Sports and told Leeds fans exactly what to expect from him.

They can expect that I will give everything, every time. I will give my best in training, in the games, I will be professional. I am really excited. It was my dream to come to England, especially a club like Leeds so I am really happy to be here. I am just waiting to achieve great things here.

Get ready for Schmidt

As we've been confidently saying, it's happening!

James Smailes

An hour to go

We'll resist the don't go to bed line, but all indications are Leeds are still very confident of getting Schmidt over the line this evening.

James Smailes

Big deal could happen elsewhere

Chelsea striker David Datro Fofana could be on his way out the club in the next hour, with Sunderland pushing to get him in.

Championship rivals get their man

Stoke City sporting director Jon Walters says the club have beaten off significant competition to sign Tom Cannon on loan from Leicester City.

The Republic of Ireland international was the subject of a £5m bid from Hull City along with a host of other potential suitors, but Cannon opted to make a temporary move to Staffordshire rather than leave Leicester City on a permanent basis.

“It’s no exaggeration to say that most clubs in the Championship wanted to sign Tom this summer, so it’s a huge vote of confidence that he has opted for Stoke City," Walters said. “His arrival is testament to his faith in the squad we are building and in the way he believes we can develop him as a footballer, and I can’t wait to see him representing our club on the field.

U21s still unbeaten

Leeds United's U21s were in Premier League 2 action this evening, drawing 1-1 against Crystal Palace in York.

Following a draw at Stoke City and a repeat result at home to Aston Villa, the U21s may still be winless this season, but they're also still undefeated after three games.

James Smailes

Great spot

This is a great spot. We've checked this out and it does indeed appear to be the agent for Isaac Schmidt. As we said earlier, we're confident from what we've been told that a deal will still go through before the deadline and a picture of the agent entering the stadium a few hours ago certainly backs up that message.

James Smailes

Belloumi transfer

It's our understanding Hull City are still in talks with Portuguese Primeira Liga club Farense over a move for Algerian winger Mohamed Belloumi, who has also been linked with Leeds. The Tigers, who face Leeds tomorrow, are running out of time but appear to be the only club in talks according to talk in East Yorkshire.

The 22-year-old wide-man, who began his career with Algerian club GC Mascara and then Oran, moved to Europe in 2022 when he joined the Portuguese outfit.

Other business

Blackburn Rovers have signed Todd Cantwell in what is a statement signing for them.

Meanwhile Sheffield United have waved goodbye to Auston Trusty, who has signed a five-year deal at Celtic.

Across the Steel City, Sheffield Wednesday are trying to get a late deal done for Mason Holgate from Everton.

James Smailes

Burnley have a real go

Burnley have this evening completed their 11th signing of the transfer window after signing Josh Laurent from Stoke City.

The relegated side are hoping to bounce straight back up and looking at their squad, they've got a good chance of doing just that.

No concerns at Leeds

While there may be some frustration or even worry growing among some supporters that Leeds have so far only confirmed the Ao Tanaka deal today, there appears to be a confidence around the club we'll get another signing at least done today, with Schmidt expected to be that deal.

While Farke wanted to boost his options up front and talk of a number 10 coming in had many hoping, that was always the lesser of the priorities and seen as a bonus if it could be done.

Promotion rivals strengthen

Sunderland have agreed a loan deal for Bournemouth centre-back Chris Mepham, according to reports from Sky Sports. The 26-year-old was set to travel to Wearside yesterday for his medical to secure the 46-capped Welsh international’s move from the South Coast to Sunderland.

James Smailes

Clock ticking

We've three and a half hours to go for Leeds United to finalise their transfer business. An attacker seems like it could be a bit of a push now, but the hope is a deal for Schmidt will still go through in time.

It is all very quiet at the moment.

Dom Howson

Burnley business

United's promotion rivals have signed Brighton & Hove Albion forward Jeremy Sarmiento on a season-long loan deal. He won promotion from the Championship during a loan spell with Ipswich Town last season. He has previously spent time with Charlton and Benfica's academies before joining the Seagulls in 2021. Smart signing.

Strong stuff from the Sheffield United boss

Leeds United have been accused of tabling a "ridiculously low" offer for Sheffield United star Gus Hamer. The creative midfielder emerged as a transfer target for the Whites earlier this week.

It is understood Leeds had a £13m bid for rejected for the Dutchman. Reports in Sheffield have claimed the Whites submitted a second offer that included Joel Piroe in a potential swap deal. Leeds have denied claims over a second offer involving Piroe.

Saturday's opponents strengthen

Hull City have completed their second signing of deadline day with the capture of Kasey Palmer from Championship rivals Coventry City.

Palmer arrives to bolster City's attacking ranks in the top third of the pitch and provide significant Championship experience with the 27-year-old just two games shy of two hundred in the second tier for a host of clubs, penning a three-year contract with the option of a fourth with City paying an undisclosed fee to the Sky Blues.

The Jamaica international, who scored the equalising goal for Coventry late on at Bristol City last weekend, is thought to have signed in time to be registered for tomorrow's game and could make his Hull debut at Elland Road against Leeds.

State of play

There's less than six hours to go until the window closes. United have so far made one deadline-day signing: Ao Tanaka. St. Gallen full-back Isaac Schmidt is also on his way.

It has gone very quiet on the No 10 front.

Tanaka's goodbye message

Midfielder Ao Tanaka has sent a goodbye message to Fortuna Dusseldorf supporters following his move to Elland Road. He spent three years at the German club. Posting on his Instagram account, he wrote:

It’s time to say goodbye. I spent good moment and bad moment. But all of these experience helped me grow as a person and football player. I’m so appreciate people who always help and support me. Thank you for everything.”

Wilder's confidence

Chris Wilder is optimistic Sheffield United will keep hold of their prized assets beyond the closure of the transfer window tonight amid Leeds United's interest in Gus Hamer. The Whites had a £13m bid for the midfielder rebuffed earlier this week.

It remains to be seen whether Leeds will return with an improved offer following claims that they tried to lure Hamer away from Bramall Lane with a cash-plus-player offer. Joel Piroe was allegedly involved in the proposal but the Whites have denied the swap deal talk. Time is running out for United to return to the negotiating table.

Sheffield United exit

Tunisia midfielder Anis Ben Slimane has left Sheffield United, joining Norwich City on a season-long loan deal. The deal includes an option to buy the 23-year-old. Norwich sporting director Ben Knapper said:

We feel he is another really good addition that will increase the competition within our group and give us more options and flexibility. He adds a slightly different profile than what we have already, and can draw upon experience of both the Premier League and international football."

Midfielder 'snubs' United move

Dinamo Zagreb’s Martin Baturina has turned down a move to Elland Road after Leeds United had a £25m offer accepted for the attacking midfielder. That is according Sportske Novosti, who say Baturina does not want to move to the Championship at this stage of his career.

Serie A side Fiorentina are also reportedly interested in the player.
