How to get full colonization of tub?Does anyone have any general advice on getting full colonization of a monotub or shoebox? I’ve tried 3 times and failed each. I make the bulk substrate using 1 coir brick, 8 cups vermiculite, 2 tablespoons gypsum. Add boiling water and allow to sit for 5-7 hours. Then when cool, and 1-2 colonized rice bags to shoebox. I’ve tried shoeboxes with 6-8 quarter inch holes drilled on the sides / covered in micropore tape. I’ve also tried shoeboxes with just keeping the lid shut, no holes. I add about 3 inches of bulk and layer the 1-2 colonized rice bags. Wait about 2 weeks, and it’s still only about 10% white coverage. Always the same. Does any of the above sound wrong? What am I missing? Extras: | Top |

If it's stalling, it's probably because you're using unhealthy spawn. If by "rice bags" you're talking about uncle Ben's rice then yeah there's your problem. Extras: | Top |

Unhealthy spawn as in a not fully colonized bag? What makes you say the uncle bens tek is a problem? I’m taking a beginner course that recommends them as a could way to start out Extras: | Top |

Most won't recommend the uncle Ben tek because its similar to inoculating any other type of grain with a spore syringe. It does work but its high risk. Spores aren't guaranteed to be clean and could have bacteria or other contams on them. Injecting grain with a dirty syringe will result in dirty grain. The great majority of people here will recommend making agar and cleaning up your cultures. If you dont have a pressure cooker/canner, they'll recommend PF Tek.In all honesty, you would be better off just learning to do agar and following a good bulk tek. Eventually, youre going to take that route anyway and the learning curve is inevitable. Extras: | Top |

I really, really, really hope youre not paying for a course thats teaching this new uncle ben's stuff.IF youre serious about this hobby, act like it. If you were trying to grow ganja would you use a 30w incandescent for light and just a dead fish for nutes and expect cup quality buds? I doubt it. Extras: | Top |

You could make so much money! Sarcasm aside, what is up with how much garbage is being taught regarding cultivating mushrooms nowadays... It's rather hilarious the kind of people that are passing off as successful cultivators. Some random friend of a friend drunkenly tried to get me to pay him to teach me the Uncle Bens tek hahaha! OP, BRF cakes are easy and way cheaper than Uncle Bens packets. Or just learn agar and move to grains already

Jeez, there's an entire subreddit about UBT. ![How to get full colonization of shoebox / monotub? - Mushroom Cultivation (99) How to get full colonization of shoebox / monotub? - Mushroom Cultivation (99)](data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==) Quote: Californialove543 said: Unhealthy spawn as in a not fully colonized bag? Shooting them into a bag of mold and bacteria food is a risky endeavor no matter the circ*mstances and UBT is usually done in dirtier conditions than any other tek. It doesn't help anyone learn how to master the craft. Layering the sub is also not something commonly done; usually the spawn and sub are mixed together and a thin pseudocasing put over the top.

FAQs
Tubs will take 2-3 weeks to fully colonize for most dung loving species. Wood loving species colonization rates will vary.
How to tell when mycelium is fully colonized? ›
You can tell when mycelium is fully colonized when the entire substrate (such as a jar or a bag) is covered with a dense, white, and fuzzy network of mycelial threads. There should be no visible uncolonized areas or contaminants, and the mycelium should appear healthy and vigorous.
How do you speed up mushroom colonization? ›
Keeping your bag at the higher end of the temperature range will encourage faster colonization. 2. After about 4-8 weeks, you should start to see mycelium growing on the substrate. You'll notice the white mycelium growing outward from the point of injection.
How long does it take to fully colonize substrate? ›
Colonization occurs after inoculation. This is when the mycelium will start to take over the grain that was inoculated with spores. This period usually lasts between 3 to 6 weeks depending on strain and environmental conditions. Ideal conditions for this phase are in a dark place and temperature between 72 F – 80 F.
What is the best temp for Monotub colonization? ›
Step 17: Put the monotub in a dark place that will maintain a temperature between 75-81°F. Disturb the tub as little as possible during this time period and do not open it until colonization is complete.
What is the best temperature for cubensis mycelium growth? ›
The optimal temperature for mycelium growth of both oyster mushroom species was obtained at 28℃.
Does mycelium need air during colonization? ›
Like humans, they consume oxygen and release CO2. During colonization, mushroom mycelium tolerates higher levels of CO2 as it's often underground, but it still needs enough fresh air exchange to breathe.
What does bad mycelium look like? ›
Spend time getting to know what your mycelium is supposed to look like so you can better identify unhealthy or contaminated patches. While mycelium is typically white and filamentous, contamination generally takes the form of green, blue, gray, or black patches or discolorations in your substrate.
Does mycelium grow faster in the dark? ›
A commonly held belief among growers is that mycelium will grow faster in total darkness. There is no data to support this premise; however, significant exposure to direct UV light from the sun can be detrimental. Light is a secondary trigger for initiating fruiting bodies.
What stimulates mycelium growth? ›
Presence of a root or root exudates stimulates growth and branching of the mycelium and apparently converts it into an 'infection ready' state (see Chapter 3), but ongoing growth does not occur and no new spores are produced unless successful colonization of a root system occurs; if the spore becomes detached, growth ...
In an area rich in nutrients, the mycelium will branch often and grow slowly, so maximising the amount of nutrients it can extract. By contrast, in an area low in nutrients the hyphae grow more rapidly and with little branching.
How to tell when a MonoTub is fully colonized? ›
7-10 days later your monotub should be well colonized with a layer of white mycelium and barely any soil visible. It is ready to fruit.
How to tell when bulk substrate is fully colonized? ›
It will take approximately 5-10 days for the substrate to completely colonize with mycelium (you will be able to tell if it has completed colonization when the substrate has turned completely white).
What temperature is needed for substrate colonization? ›
During the colonization of each batch the containers are shaken every few days to further distribute the mycelium around. Temperatures are maintained where the mycelium is growing in a range of 75-76F.
How long does it take for mycelium to mature? ›
It takes anywhere from two weeks to two months to grow mushroom mycelium. At Host Defense®, we grow 17 different species. It's important to know the specific incubation timeline for each mushroom species in order to reach peak efficacy.
How long does it take from substrate to fruiting? ›
Controlling all of these at the right time will cause the substrate to fruit. it usually takes about 2 weeks (10-16 days). Once the kit starts to fruit you will see tiny mushrooms or “pins” forming on the substrate.
Can you over colonize mycelium? ›
If your mycelium has over colonized this could be for a few reasons, the most common being the lid has been left on for longer than required.
